Rumor has it that Stephen Daldry, director of Billy Elliot and The Hours, is now in talks to direct the first standalone Star Wars movie about Obi-Wan Kenobi.
The news comes from Tracking Board reporter Jeff Sneider on his Meet the Movie Press podcast [via /Film ] while he was talking about upcoming projects with co host Simon Thompson.
Sneider said that “his sources have told him that Stephen Daldry is going to wind up being the director of the first standalone Obi-Wan Kenobi movie.” He then added, “He’s negotiating right now for that gig.”
As fanboys know, there have been many rumors over the years about what an Obi-Wan Kenobi standalone movie might entail.
Some rumors pointed to a version of the “Old Ben” story where he’s a crazy hermit on Tatooine, while others suggested an adaptation of the novel Labyrinth of Evil which sees Obi-Wan and Anakin fighting in the Clone Wars.
One or more of those may still pan out, but Sneider’s sources say that “it’s not going to be based on any particular” Star Wars Expanded Universe story.
However, the script is said to follow Obi-Wan from the time he left the Jedi Order until Luke Skywalker shows up at his door in A New Hope.
With all these rumors about standalone movies and a Boba Fett movie, it’s starting to feel like the Star Wars Anthology films are becoming a little overcrowded.
Then again, Rogue One just proved that there is an audience for these non-Skywalker stories and with The Force Awakens passing $2 billion at the worldwide box office it seems like anything Star Wars sells these days.
The Obi-Wan movie is said to be the first of an annual Star Wars stand-alone movie with a different character and setting each time.
